Guide to food, drink, restaurants and places to eat in Riga

Riga is a popular travel destination and was the European Region of Gastronomy in 2017. Latvian cuisine is a mix of meat and fish dishes, often served with pickled vegetables.

Here are some of the places we ate and drank over a long weekend in Riga and in our opinion, some of the best restaurants in Riga.

1. Restorans 3

Go here for dinner and experience their tasting menu. We got 6 courses with wine pairing and each course was impeccably presented. The courses included scallops, pasta and a creme brulee all served with a (big) glass of wine; an assortment of red, white and sparkling wines. The restaurant is quite basic, but they make up for it with the amazing food and wonderful service.

2. Riga Central Market

Go to Riga Market to experience all the foods Latvia has to offer under one roof. Situated just outside of Old Town, this market is the largest in Europe and the building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are so many market vendors selling everything from pastries to pickled vegetables and smoked fish to biscuits. Even if you aren't hungry, it's a great place to visit to soak up Latvian culture and see the cuisine.

3. Kolonade

Situated on the edge of the city park, Kolonade serves modern Latvian cuisine and drinks. The restaurant overlooks the park through its large windows and makes an ideal setting for either lunch or dinner. We went there for dinner on a Sunday and the food was great, we had Steaks and salmon tartare for starter, however the restaurant was quite empty. I would recommend the Latvian Rhubarb Fizz cocktail.

4. Skyline Bar

Skyline Bar is located on the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Riga. This bar is a great place to have a cocktail before you go off for your dinner plans. The cocktail menu was extensive, but they were slightly more expensive than most places in Riga, but you pay to see the impressive views of the city. Also note there are TWO Radisson Blu hotels very close to each other, so check the correct address for Skyline.

5. Herbarjis

This cafe, bar and restaurant on the top of Galleria Riga (a shopping mall) is a great lunch spot The setting is like a glass conservatory and there are views of the city below. The food is good and perfect for a full meal or a light snack. I think it would be nice to go here for sunset drinks.
