Things to do in Miami, whether you are there for a week or a couple of days.
Miami has been on my list for years, the draw of sun, beach and a city that has world renowned restaurants and bars, as well as culture. There are so many things to do in Miami, so I've put together a list of things you can do whilst we there which I found the best things to do in Miami. We were there for 5 days but you could squeeze a few things into a couple of days.
1. Have a Beach Day at South Beach
South Beach (also known as SoBe) is the place to be in Miami. I've visited many cities with beaches and never find the beaches very nice as they are often overcrowded, dirty and polluted, however Miami Beach is the exception. Each morning they have people clearing all the litter on the beach and then bulldozers go over the sand to make it smooth and flat (reason why you see so many runners able to run on the sand). I got up early one morning to watch the sunrise on South Beach and it was amazing, would recommend.
2. View the Art Deco Buildings on Ocean Drive
Miami's buildings and architecture are iconic and something to spend some time looking at. Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District is made up of over 800 buildings and structures (located on Miami Beach between 5th Street and 23rd Street, along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue) built between 1923 and 1943. Go early to avoid the crowds if you want to get good photos.
3. Visit Wynwood - Miami's Art District
Wynwood is Miami's creative capital and full is of street art as well as some of the best restaurants and bars we went to whilst in Miami. Wonder the streets and look at the street art and murals, visit the Wynwood Walls and eat & drink at the restaurants and bars. View my Wynwood Blog Post for more info on what to do whilst there.
4. Go to a Baseball Game
We wanted to do a sports game whilst in Miami and the baseball was on so we went and saw Miami Marlins vs San Francisco Giants at the LoanDepot Park. We knew nothing about baseball but wanted to experience it. Tickets cost a variety of different prices but we had good seats and the tickets only cost around $10. The food and drink (hotdogs, fried chicken, nuts, beer) were also quite reasonably priced. The stadium has a retractable roof and when we went it was closed meaning the stadium was cool as it was air conditioned. It's a fun day out and you can't have to stay for the whole game.
5. Go for a Drink at the Fancy Hotel Bars
Don't fancy splurging out a small fortune for a hotel room at one of the top hotels in Miami but still want to go and see them? The best way is to go for a meal or just for a drink at the hotel bar. Some of the hotels we visited were The Standard, The Edition and The Goodtime Hotel.
6. Cycle Around Miami
Hiring a bike is a great way to see Miami. There are cycle paths along the beach, meaning when things get too hot you can jump off for a swim in the sea. Ocean Drive also has cycle paths, so it feels safe to cycle on the roads.
7. Take a Boat Tour to see Celebrity Homes
Miami is home to the rich and famous. Want to see where they live? Take a boat trip around Miami and get the best views of their incredible houses. One of the best ways to see Miami is is also by boat and you can see the iconic Miami skyline from the water. There are a lot of companies that offer boat tours for different durations.
8. Go to a Pool Party at Strawberry Moon
We were staying at The Goodtime Hotel and every Friday-Sunday they have a pool party called Strawberry Moon. As a guest of the hotel you get free entry to the pool party (otherwise it's around $30). Bear in mind that although you get in free, you can't sit on any of the loungers, beds etc. you need to pay and the daybeds/cabanas/bungalows cost between $500-$3,000 for the day. They give you towels, so we just laid them down on the ground (like a lot of other people were doing) and it's still fun. We met a lot of people who had got in for free and got free drinks all day with a promoter, so it might be worth researching how to do this before going.
9. Eat & Drink at TimeOut Market
We headed to the TimeOut market to escape a day of rain in Miami. It's a food hall filled with different renowned vendors including Vietnamese sandwiches, Ramen, fried chicken and pastries. It's the perfect place to come if you can't decide which cuisine you want or people want different things. There is also a large bar in the middle for drinks.
10. Visit the Versace Mansion (The Villa Casa Casuarina)
We wanted to see The Versace Mansion but weren't bothered about eating here. Instead of paying an entry fee to look around, you just have to buy a drink at the bar instead. The drinks are really expensive here (over $30 for a cocktail) and the staff escort you to the bar and wait for you to buy a drink before you are able to look around, which was quite strange.
